day two

today was good. i don't think i even cried once. strike that, i read some comments and emails. and they made me cry. thank you a million thank yous for all your support and kind words and love. they mean more than we can say. you are all the bomb.

we woke up today and thought it was sunday and tried to be reverent since we didn't know how to get to church. then we found out it was saturday and headed to downtown bassaterre for the carnival celebration. we figured out you can take the bus into town for about $1 US. my mom would die if she saw the way people drive here and me holding on tight to my kids so they don't fall out the window. and driving on the left side of the road unnerves me. the kids love it all. they have done remarkably well in adjusting so far.

bassaterre was crazy. LOUD music and people in sparkly bikinis. and we stick out like a sore thumb. oh well. i really only saw a handful of tourists and i like that our experience so far has been authentic. i'm sad to say that people have not been very friendly at all. i guess we just look like obnoxious tourists. we walked all around town and then grabbed some barbecue chicken at a road stand. and two cokes because jamie has reverted to mission-mode and since the prophet told him to drink coke in southeast asia, we will drink it here too. i guess it kills things in your stomach?

i'm boring myself, so let's get on to the pictures. i'm trying to shoot in manual mode and i horribly overexposed everything today because i was wearing sunglasses. sorry about that.

we don't have a bathtub, so the kids took a bath in the laundry tub today.

trying to unpack.

the kids on the front porch.

it is so hot here, there is no way in heck i am going to spend time each morning with a blow dryer and flat iron. so, embracing the curly.

my pictures do no justice to the craziness.

sparkly bikinis. these were pretty much the main attraction as far as i can tell.

i think that is nevis. it is cheap to ferry across. i'm excited for that.

i'll try to keep posts more exciting and concise in the future. it feels good to tell you all about things at this point. thank you again for all your love.

(by the way, some of you don't know why we're here. it's for the first 16 months of medical school for jamie. then we are headed to maine. he starts orientation on monday! yay! that's the greatest part of this whole thing. that we're moving forward in life. reaching our goals, baby.)

blog stalker here...

sounds adventurous, sounds hard, sounds fun, sounds warm!

(but honestly, i'd be scared. i had to adjust to central new york and i thought that was hard...)

(well, i suppose that's not helping...)

anyway, love your blog. are you gonna be able to watch the new season of lost? afterall, that's what's important!

this comment is all over the place. i'm just nervous.

Humidity is the BEST thing for natural curl, Abby! Look how curly your hair is! And Pearl's! I only wish mine would behave that way when I'm too lazy to flatiron... Washington and Oregon are good for that, too.

You're amazing, Abby. And so much more brave than I think I could ever be. I miss you guys already, and I just saw you a few days ago... take a deep breath, have another Coke, and take LOTS MORE PICTURES!

Love you!

Oh. My. Gosh. It's a whole different UNIVERSE and you've barely been gone 24 hours!! Is there a library? Is coffee within the realm of possibility (just between you, Jamie and me)? I love your pictures and your hair. I love you.

In the picture where James is looking fierce, there is a guy in a red shirt that looks like Snoop Dog. ;-)

The photo of Pearl hugging Milo is REALLY cute too!

I love the coffee comment, D. Coffee solves all woes, perhaps?

Steve and I talked today about a trip in early 2011.

Abs--I had not heard that you guys are headed to Maine after this adventure. I have lately (as in the last year or so) been really intrigued at the thought of Maine for some reason. I hope it's exactly how I picture it. It can't be that far from Michigan...I think I feel a trip coming on! And seriously, these will be some of the best memories of your life.

My nerves are calmer tonight knowing you're settling in. The pictures are wonderful! Paula and I were SO enjoying them. Milo and Pearl are too cute for words. Funny that you lost a day. I can't wait to hear about your experiences at church on the real Sunday. I love, love, love, love you all. Missing you in San Diego. AG

Abby, I think I HAVE that green sparkly bikini! And I wear it around Harlem!

Just joking. I'm so excited to read about your adventures. This is going to be hard but so good and it will get easier with time! You and your hair are BEAUTIFUL!

AFter seeing the pictures of the locals, you guys fit right in. No worries:). I was expecting to see you in the green sparkly bikini...maybe in 16 months you will be at home enough to pull that off:)! You guys are in my thoughts and prayers right now. Enjoy a reverent sabbath tomorrow...
p.s. diana's comments are my favorite:).

i think i blow dried my hair and straightened it like 3 times this last summer in orlando. but it was kinda fun just embracing the way my hair really is. yours looks so cute. i just love your little family, i mean who doesn't. i'm so excited to just see how your life is there- its so refreshing to see and read about how different other places are. there are so many people who never leave and have no idea what the world is like. and taking on this new adventure really (to me anyway) is like improving the mind. i don't know. hopefully that makes sense. love all the pics!!!

I love every single photo. I love how curly yours and Pearl's hair is. The bath picture and Pearl hugging
milo are my favorites.

For some reason I didn't know the next portion of school for you guys will be in Maine. That is awesome. We will definitely come visit because I've always wanted to go... you know, the whole sailing thing. We were actually hoping to do our Del Sol internship there in the first place. Maybe we'll look into it if graduating college doesn't work out for us this year. :)

Abs, I can't believe you're there! i'm sad I didn't get to say goodbye! That's exactly how i felt when i moved to new york! No one is nice, feels like a different country!:) I know you'll love it and meet lots of good friends! I love the pics, keep posting more! love RA!

We wish you the best of luck in med school and are really really excited for when you move to MAINE! While we may be in another state, in New England, that doesn't matter, because everything is so close. We love going to Maine and of course you'll want to come see Boston; it'll be a great switch for both of us!

Abby, Abby, Abby!
I'm loving following your huge adventures. Medical school + a tropical foreign land = high high adventure.

Are they selling those sparkly bikini's to the tourists? I see a business opportunity here.

p.s. manual mode looks great!
p.p.s. your curls are so cute, you may just keep em for life, humidity or no.
p.p.p.s hang on to those kiddos tight on that bus, girl!

I just noticed above the sparkly bikini dancers K F C. (So that must be where you got your fast food chicken). The colonel really gets around.
Awesome.

Okay first off, your blog wins for most comments on each post. Everyone loves you and everyone knows why.

Second, I am SOO excited for you guys! I had no idea you were still heading to the caribbean for school. It will be such a fun adventure and I think you are just awesome for doing it. I love yours and Pearl's curly hair and am a little jealous of it. I think these pictures are FABULOUS and will definitely be treasures you'll keep forever. Good luck to you guys!
