twister, you old duffer

we are raising chickens! hey, why not?! (here is one reason: they STINK. here is another reason: they STINK.)

pictured left to right are twister, roger, and queenie. not pictured: sugar ball (don't say a word!), arfwin (don't ask), and sugar powder (it's all about sugar over here!). milo named sugar powder and as soon as he said it pearl burst into tears and said, "hey, that's what i was going to name mine!"

i like them and i look forward to good eggs, but in the meantime, they are in a box in our bathroom and they stink. can't wait until our bathroom stinks for normal reasons. (did i really just type that?)

abby! this is awesome, i love their names! my youngest daughter is missing out on things like this, because we had hens with our older kids... in fact, i just wrote a post for easter {next week} showing our old hens...it was so fun to have fresh eggs - my kids would run out every morning to get them... we called all of ours "city chicks!" :)

perfect for easter. i like roger. who named him?

Totally love Twister's pose. I'm jealous you have chickens. There is no way in Hades our neighbors would put up with them (one neighbor HATES our cats and another neighbor hates our kids kicking around the soccer ball--so chickens? No way!).

yay for chickens! we're doing the very same thing this year. I've been wanting to for ages, but last year I had a human chick instead so this is the year. i love the names...i can't wait to hear what lena comes up with.

Well, that was good for a laugh! Arfwin, indeed. Those kids' wheels sure are turning! Thanks for the day-brightener. AG

bless your heart. we babysat some chicks last year for a project with grace's school and i was done with them after a few hours. they chirped at all hours of the day. and pooped on everything. and tucker might have dropped one and it froze for like 5 minutes. i thought it was a goner. let me know how the eggs turn out!

So jealous! Some day I will not live in a town house and I can have chickens. I'll be honest though, I might have to buy the full grown variety. Chicks are cute, but I hear they sometimes drop like flies. I wish you luck!

Brian really, really wants us to have chickens eventually. He is into the whole idea of gardening and letting the chickens walk all over your plants and poop on them to make them better. I don't know how I feel about that. I do like the idea of fresh eggs though!

I really want chickens, I don't want other pets because they come in the house but chickens could live in the yard and make us eggs. I am not sure about the stink factor or if they are allowed in our suburban neighborhood but I so want chickens.

Enjoy,

elena

my mom just got some little chicks a few weeks ago. they went from being super adorable to not so cute...but i'm excited for the eggs.

good luck with the stink.

Oh, but they're so cute. Like with kids, the cuteness balances out the stank.

That's such a cool picture. I am excited for the turquoise eggs.

This shows how much I know about animals. When you told me you got chicks and that one would lay turquoise eggs I was serious when I said, "Oh, perfect for Easter!" I thought they'd grow into full grown chickens by Easter. Is that totally wrong? When will they be big?

And just to make my comment long, as usual, I will keep writing and say that those names are hilarious and remind me of suck ups (was that the fish's name?). Speaking of... my piano student's fish from Oliver's birthday party are still alive! Yours died on the way home! I bet you are glad...

We used to have four chickens. Eggs...super nice. Loved loved loved them. Hens...noisy and woke me up at 6:30 every morning. Not so much love for them. They also had some issues with pecking. If you do, get rid of the culprit quickly before it affects the entire flock. Just my limited experience advice. The kids love chasing them around the yard too.

We used to have chickens as well. We kept our chicks in our bathroom as well. It stunk, as well. Just beware of coyotes, raccoons and other animals, even your neighbor's dog, who might find your chickens yummy, when you do let them outside. You probably already knew that, but just in case. Those are some reasons we don't have chickens anymore. We, no not me, the kids, loved to gather the eggs too. Good luck!

Haha, this is awesome! I hear they are the perfect pets! My brother and sister-in-law just got a bunch of chickens and she recently blogged about "How to give a chicken a bath". So. in case you ever need to know and want the info, here is the link! http://mcfamilycircus.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-to-give-chicken-bath.html

My daughters and I have visited the chicks at IFA about 15 times already this spring! If only we lived in a place where we could keep animals, i'd get some in a heartbeat. Fresh eggs? Yes please!

On a side note, since I know you are also a book lover (like me) I'm doing a book giveaway on my blog. You should so totally enter it) :)

I am kind of jealous. Tell me how raising chickens goes. I would like chickens, but in our town it is too wanna be ritzy and they are not allowed & if my neighbors hate my dog I am sure they would report me on chickens. I love your last line- can't wait until the bathroom stinks for normal reasons- ha ha ha :)
