i made a quilt. it is denyse schmidt's big zig. i didn't use her pattern, but i used measurements from here. for the rest i relied on the sage advice of my sister sarah. i fell in love with a quilt she made recently (it is really amazing. don't compare it to mine ok.) and was thisclose to making it when she told me about big zig, which i thought was more appropriately masculine for milo. it's his quilt. he has yet to own a bed, but that's irrelevant.
anyway, it was wonderful and painful to make. a lot like childbirth really. the naive excitement, the planning, the pain, oh the pain, the frustration, the wondering why you did this, the completion and seeing its imperfectness and adoring it anyway, and then the craving for cafe rio.

ReplyDeleteohhh i love it! those colors! when you said "big zig" it reminded me a little bit of the "ziggy piggy" scene from bill and ted's excellent adventure.

Hi Abby, I'm stalking you again. I just have to tell you that this little analogy between making a quilt and childbirth made me laugh out loud. Perfect! I am a non-sewer who always looks at Sarah's quilts with envy, so it was fun to see yours--it turned out beautifully! I really enjoy your blog, and someday, in the next decade maybe, I'm going to make a quilt, dang it. You heard it here.
